It was beginning to look like the Illinois senator was going to get through the bid for the Democratic Primary without any scars, but it finally sHome / News

friendly with some questionable characters, and is perhaps the reason he raised over $75 million to finance his, the most expensive pre-election expense in history. He has done a poor job denying the accusations. Hillary has picked up  on it, and she will probably take it further. Meanwhile, it looks like McCain will have to run against Obama, or perhaps it could have to be decided at the convention. McCain will now have to choose his running mate, but he definitely faces tough competition in the general election.

We are still wondering if Wal-Mart will build a superstore here. It has cooled down in recent months, and with the changing economy we could have to accept the smaller version.

It would pay you to drive by and see the beautiful Health Department building, which is expected to be ready for use in June. It could be among the best in Kentucky, if not the best. Most employees will occupy private offices, we have been told.

Tommy Engle’s downtown eating place joins the other places that continue to do good business. Obviously there is room for all of them.

We have read in metro papers that college enrollment in Kentucky will take a setback due to reduced funds available from the new administration in Frankfort. This happens every time a new governor takes office, and political affiliation makes no difference. So far, the private colleges have reported very little difference from last year.

From reports that we have received, the local Baptist Regional Center has done very well with admissions since the new buildings were completed. The new rehab center at the local hospital is very efficient.

Very little information has been received concerning the office complex and the employees in its operation. Several employees have been reported on their new jobs.

We have heard very little about the historical information that Sol Warren has made available over the years. It is due to his being somewhat under the weather.

We don’t usually comment on any particular local food items, but the KFC chicken pot pies are delicious. One pie is far too much for one meal, unless you consume a pretty good amount. Come to think about it, we have a lot of good items in the local places.

Most cattle people are glad to receive more than $1 for good feeder cattle now. They should get higher next month.

For What It's Worth

Every election held in Knox County leaves factions that don’t get along too well after the voting is counted. For the most part, the hard feelings develop because the defeated side thinks that in some way some voters slipshucked them. Others blame the good politicians, claiming it was their doings that led to their defeat. In the past, many cases came up when the weak candidates would ask me how they were doing. In many cases, I simply told them the truth, and that was that I could say. You just hate to tell somebody that he is defeated. When I told them what they did not want to hear, they got their feelings hurt. It is perhaps best to ease out and tell them that you don’t know. In most cases, you really don’t know, but they rarely believe you. It troubles me to tell a friend that he is defeated, but in several cases that is how I handle it.

I remember one time when my friend Ronnie Messer started to spend a bundle and he took my advice and deposited the money into the bank and failed to waste it.

Mike Corey and Troy Hampton can predict the outcome of local elections better than anybody know. Kenneth Lay is good at predicting the outcome also. In the past, I felt like Bob and Clyde were the best at predicting the outcome of the races in the county.

Will Hillary come off and give the nomination to Obama, or will she hang on until the chips are down at the convention? She uses as her excuse that her supporters want her to fight to the end. This is one time that I sort of agree with her that there is still some hope that she might pull it off.

It is very boring to have to view all of the propaganda that CNN puts out 24 hours a day. According to all of those people, John McCain is out of it from the beginning. He could surprise a lot of people, and I doubt that Bush will kill his chances in the end.

It pleases me to read the personal comments from week to week that our writers come up with. Eddie has some very strong pieces from time to time, and Marilynn usually writes about her personal experiences in her past life. It is always refreshing to have good people handling the job at the paper.

-------

When I visited the hair salon run by my friend Earl Mays’ daughter, it was very impressive to me. She told me that she rode her Harley along with her dad while he was living. Earl loved his bike better than most anybody I know. He had a few minor accidents, but far and large he was a careful operator. Everybody knows that accidents will happen and it behooves them to be careful.

With adequate moisture thus far it looks like a good crop year ahead for our farmers. They can’t stand another year like 2007.

Harmony among fiscal court members seems to be lacking somewhat; however, it was good to see the unanimous decision on the sale of the old Knox County Hospital to Union College. When harmony exists, everyone benefits.

This is one of my most beautiful Psalms. “Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.” Psalm 19:14
